Do I Really Want A Zune?…

04.11.07 Posted in Apple, Microsoft, Personal by jdmacor

Microsoft's ZuneJohn Chow is up to his usual antics again. He is running a new contest where you can win a Zune. This gave me a chance to ponder one of the greatest questions available to man. A mystery surpassed perhaps only by outer space or belly button lint… Do I want a Zune?

Let me first say, that I have never owned a mac, but have always had iPods (at least since they were available for Windows users). In that sense, I am a big part of that whole problem for Apple, where iPod User = Mac User. Its not that I don’t like them. I really do. Its just that every time I am buying a computer, I find a more interesting Windows laptop (right now I have a little tablet).

Anyways, the point is that I use iPods and the Zune is pretty far from being an iPod. The only reason I would need a Zune is just for comparison; to reassure myself that I haven’t been blinded by slick commercials and U2. Maybe I am also just curious. I mean, it does have a bigger screen, right?

Well, then do I want a Zune?… The answer is yes.

well to be honest…you don’t want a zune. all in all it’s an enormous hassle. first, there has been the occasional issue of receiving a zune with stuff already on it, not usually a problem except for the little fact that each zune is registered to a computer….and nigh impossible to re-register onto another (for an iPod you wipe it clean and it’s good to go). seconds, if you do get a brand new fangled working one…you have to register. now i know for the iTunes store you have to register, but if you plug an iPod in, there’s no need to ever even go into the store…zune is a different story. then, once you do get in the store you can’t just buy a song, you have to buy MS Zune points or whatever the hell it is they’re calling it, similar to X-Box live content.

as if all this weren’t enough include zune software install issues (though to be fair when i tried it out it installed just fine…then again i didn’t force a zune onto my alienware, no means no), buggy software when installed, and of the all aighty ollor (sorry simpsons quote, nothing against MS i just love quoting the simpsons and that popped into my head).

in all, it’s just too much of a hassle. now if apple would take the iPhone rip out the phone part and stick in a bigger hard drive (20-30gb), leaving the stripped down version of OSX in there and the ability to install software, and i’m in MP3 player heaven…till then my 5th gen ipod will suffice. i’ve got enough headaches (and bills) as it is.

But, dude… its a contest… maybe I could turn around and give it away on my site…

  3. Well, I see the post dates back to 2007… Time has proved, indeed, nobody did want a Zune at all. In fact, the success of iPod / iPhone has been total, and has actually set THE standard for portable mp3 players…

Zune is an emerging and more competitive to iPod.
