Review: Making Money Online (Linky Love)
Post Info Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 4:13 pm by jdmacor Print Print this page

I have known the Linky Love blog since its inception. She has been a great blogging buddy over these past couple of months and really shown some love on this site (just check out those top commentators). In addition, she will offer up a nice review of your site if you review Linky Love: Making Money Online. So in the spirit of helping others out, and giving (what is hopefully) constructive criticism, I present the review:

About:

Well, to be honest, I don’t know much about Linky. I only know she is a girl, because MyBlogLog says so… She is also definitely from Malaysia (incidentally, a lot of the blogger I know are from South East Asia as well… what is the deal?…). At any rate, I want to share this quote from her own about page:

Lets make love together ;-) Kinky Linky love that is!

If you were to be all analytical about that, you could say that she knows how to bait people, while getting her business done; fantastic qualities to have if you are going to write about making money with this internet thing.

Design:

Linky is using a theme called “Quadruple Blue” and it is a nice little 4 column, widget ready theme from WP Designer. The colors are various shades of blue, along with a splash of white and some orange accents with the links. It is certainly not graphically intensive, as it seems to sport about 3 or four images in the actual design. Here is a screen shot of the original theme:

Quadruple Blue

As for customization, Linky hasn’t done too much with the theme. There are no design changes, but that is not necessarily bad. There isn’t anything actually wrong with the design, so editing it without some design experience may end up in disaster. However, I would highly recommend adding a logo of some type. There should be some visual cue to tell the reader what the site is; a branding of sorts. Only the product in this case is a website. Here is what the actual blog looks like:

Making Money Online

Content:

The premise of this site is quite simple. The goal is to foster link exchanges. You can either simply link to the site (from your sidebar, for example) or write a review (this post would be an example). I couldn’t find any specific guidelines for a review, so I chose to use my standard format. But Linky should add something like a page that could explain how the review should be (like how many words, how many links, etc.). That would add a sense of professionalism to the offer.

The actual blog content seems more like a second thought here. And it is a bit of a shame too, because there are definitely some useful posts. I am not saying that the link exchange mantra should be downplayed; only that the actual blog posts should be better promoted somehow. That way, the site could keep getting those coveted reviews, while receiving feedback in the form of participation and comments (which is a natural link builder).

Either way, as I previously mentioned, there are a great deal of good posts on the site. The topic (as you may have guessed) is how to make money online. There are posts that review different ad and affiliate programs as well as some good general advice for beginners. Here is a sample of posts:

Conclusion:

Making Money Online is a fantastic place to start looking for, well, ways to make money. Additionally, it can also help you foster online relationships, namely with some Link(y) Love! I had a few recommendations, but overall the site is a good read.

Why Malaysians blog? Just not enough job opportunities for people that speak a bit of decent English…

Ok, lots of good feedback, I was in need of that :-) Especially the posts that you highlight, all is now kind of “unfindable”. So any good suggestion to counter that is most welcome!

    Jdavid, some visualisation please:
“However, I would highly recommend adding a logo of some type”
Could you draw a draft on your screenshot how things could look better?
And how would I change a bit on the design of the theme as you hinted? Your are the template guy, not me, so me eyes and ears are now fully open!

Would I be permitted to use your modified template that you are using here? And if yes, where to download?

Just visited Linky Love. Another new blog talking about how to make money online. The info inside the blog doesn’t attract me but the blog template catches my eye. It looks good and professional.

    Hi Linky Love,

There are really nothing wrong to your blog. In fact I think you have posted the content your targeted audience want to read. This is the most important part of blogging.

About my previous comment, I said the content doesn’t attract me. It is just my personal comment. You don’t need to take it seriously. I’m a full-time bloggers, I read a lot of blogs. The reason I said that on the day I visit your blog is because some of your posts are quite similar to other blogs I have read. Your blog background and template look nice. I like it actually.

Really sorry for making you confuse.

If Mark is talking about the background of JDavid? I must say I love white backgrounds ;-)

Thanks for the defense linky! But really, I like it too. I mean, the original theme had diagonal stripes, but that was too much for me. However, I am considering switching the right hand column’s background color.
