From the folks that brought you Amazon, comes Sparky! The weirdest name for a long overdue Firefox extension. Every good webmaster is familiar with the Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer and its importance to Alexa ratings (don’t worry if you don’t know what I am talking about; just get caught up). Well, they have finally come out with a similar tool for Firefox. You can now see your ratings as well as contribute to your Alexa rank!
Previously, it was unclear if existing 3rd party plugins for Firefox really had any impact on Alexa’s rankings. Well, with this plugin coming directly from Alexa, you know your browsing counts! So, please go download the extension, so that we can all move up in the rankings (I am having troubles myself).

Isn’t Alexa toolbar widely considered as spamware today? Two years back it was.
The plugin for Firefox doesn’t bug you or really slow you down, but it does inform alexa about your surfing habits, but that is how they get their rankings.

I have never given Alexa rankings much merit. The stats are too skewed towards tech, webmaster & marketing websites. This is because those are the main groups using the alexa toolbar. The average web surfer has no reason to install it.
