Thoughts On Apple’s WWDC 2008
Post Info Monday, June 9th, 2008 7:40 pm by J David Print Print this page

I was totally ready to fall in love with Apple’s latest and greatest gadgets. Well, it turns out that there was only one gadget… But that’s cool! I would love it, right?… Can someone say “2 megapixels” for me?… Also, I want to share with you, my reader, my all-encompassing conspiracy regarding Apple.

A Lot To Like?

So, there is a great deal to like about the updated iPhone. I mean, high speed, cool apps, GPS; it should be a windfall. The only problem is, this is how the original iPhone should have been released. These shouldn’t be called new features, but rather requirements that other phones have had for years!

What possible excuse could they have for keeping a 2 megapixel camera? And still not have video capture?! It just seems like we will have to wait for iPhone v.3, but then again, we always have to wait when it comes to Apple, don’t we?

There Were Announcements Other Than The iPhone?

I almost missed these products, because nobody really seems to interested in them. The new MobileMe service? I could care less. I mean, Gmail along with a suite of other free online services can entirely replace the service, but more on that later.

The other bit of news, or lack thereof was about the elusive cat known as Snow Leopard. I didn’t hear much about it other than it is slated for release in one year and that it will just barely be incremental. It sounds to me like Apple is admitting that their latest release didn’t cut it when it came to polish, so this next release will just be that; polish. I hope they won’t be charging full price, if anything at all.

The Apple Conspiracy Theory

It just seems like Apple always introduces a product, but leaves out critical features; not because they were too dumb to think of them, but because they planned it that way. In fact, this is a really brilliant business model; they hold back features so that they can release “new features” at about an annual rate! This is exactly how they run their OS business. Is there a crucial difference between the iterations of OSX? I don’t think so. A couple of the releases should have been free service packs! Think about it; if you have bought every version of OSX since it has come out, at $150 a pop, you have spent $750!! Vista Ultimate whatever-the-hell isn’t looking so bad right now, eh?

I know that many businesses hold back features, but Apple does it differently (pun intended). They hold back critical, basic necessities (think how long ago they should have had virtual desktops!) so that their next release seems necessary. Don’t get me wrong, I love their products, but I am not a fan boy; I am one of those self-hating Apple addicts. Rather than parade my new gear around, I would rather hide it and keep it a secret; much like sitcoms do with their Apple stuff by putting a sticker over the logo.

All that being said, I still will be picking one of those bad boy iPhones up myself! What about you?

I would not go quite that far to call it a conspiracy. I would rather call it being cautious and careful. Offer what you know will work and keep working at add ons till they are ready for new features.

The entire modern world works around the policy of obsolescence, so what is the problem if Apple follows the same?

I see your point Nicole. And in fact, Gizmodo had a hilarious take on the omitted features (Read it here). They make the good point that from the developers stand point, it makes sense to do things incrementally, so that they don’t have a botched product on their hands.

At the same time, why not take a risk and really wow the fans? I guess we will be having this same conversation in a year when the next iPhone is rumored for release…

Hilarious is the right word to use for Gizmodo’s post. Even from an ordinary small business person’s point of view, it makes sense to keep innovating. As a customer, I need to be satisfied with the product completely to become a repeat customer. Wowing a customer is alright when you are in to something like video games but not a gadget that you expect your customer to use day in day out!

This is what I have learned about Apple. I was never into the Macs so I don’t know about their upgrade OS systems but I was an early iPod Touch adopter. I got my Touch prior to Jan 2008 (in Dec.) and I would have had to pay $20 to get the new apps such as weather, stocks, maps, mail when it was bundled free later on. The 2.0 software to access the Apple Apps store also costs 10 bucks. So if you were an early adopter, you will be out $30. Why is Apple nickle and diming us? I understand that technology changes and things get faster, more memory and cheaper. But in the case of the Apple store? Just give us the software because we’ll be buying shizz off your website!
